Engagement rate is the number brands look at after follower count. It tells them whether your followers actually care.

The formula

Engagement rate = (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100, averaged over your last 10–12 posts. Some brands also add saves and shares if you send them Insights.

You can use our free engagement rate calculator to do the maths.

What's normal

Engagement drops as accounts grow – that's true everywhere. Rough ranges we see for Indian accounts:

  • Under 10K followers: 3–8% is healthy.
  • 10K–100K: 1.5–4%.
  • 100K–1M: 1–2.5%.
  • Over 1M: under 1.5% is common.

Reels-heavy accounts tend to sit at the higher end. Meme and news pages often run lower.

How to improve it

  • Ask a specific question in the caption – "Which one would you pick, 1 or 2?" gets more comments than "Thoughts?".
  • Reply to every comment in the first hour.
  • Post carousels: people swipe, and they save.
  • Remove obviously dead or spam followers occasionally.

A note on bought followers

If you buy followers, your engagement rate drops unless you also add likes. A simple rule: for every 1,000 followers you add, plan for 30–60 likes per post on your recent posts. Our Instagram likes start at a few rupees per thousand, so this costs very little.
